Cancers: Hypoxia increases the cancer cells' force • Shortlink
A team of researchers at Johns Hopkins University ( Washington, USA) found that hypoxia, a reduced oxygen amount which often persists in cancer, is enough to trigger a chain chemical reactions which turns the breast cancer cells into rigid and invasive structures.
The research, on-line published on the "PNAS", stresses the factors which trigger hypoxia in promoting metastasis on breast cancer. The survey found that the production of two proteins, known to worsen cancer development, increases dramatically when cancer cells are exposed in environment with low amount of oxygen.
Interfering genetically in laboratory to arrest factors which promote oxygen deficit in cancer, the team reduced the mobility and aggressivness of cancer cells. The research data also revealed that women with high level of both the proteins have more possibilities to die for briest cancer than those women with low levels of proteins.
